We strongly advise our clients to stay away from so-called "invention promotion" companies. The searches these companies perform are usually incomplete and misleading. After the search they usually recommend filing a patent application, and then they offer to represent the inventor for several thousand dollars. Once the money is paid, little is done by them, and the money is lost and wasted. Sometimes it is wise to submit plans to a potential manufacturer under a "confidential disclosure" contract. However, many companies refuse to sign such agreements, and they often provide their own agreement for you to sign before they will accept disclosure of an invention. The danger is that they attempt to absolve the company of all liability.
